As we near the end of another vibrant school year, it’s natural for both excitement and a few nerves to arise as children prepare to move on to the next stage in their Arnold House journey.

Transition, whether it’s to a new classroom, a different teacher, or even a new part of the school, can bring about a mix of emotions. Throughout the school, we recognise just how important it is to support children through these changes with care. Thoughtful planning and a child-centered approach lie at the heart of our process where we focus on nurturing emotional readiness alongside academic preparation, ensuring that children feel both confident and secure as they step into their new year groups.

We place great emphasis on making transitions as smooth and positive as possible. Our approach is rooted in understanding each child as an individual, emotionally and academically. Transition plans are carefully designed with this in mind, helping boys feel ready to embrace the next step. In some cases, an individualised approach is needed, and that’s where our Learning Support Department plays an invaluable role. They work closely with staff and families to ensure unique needs are considered, providing tailored support when it’s needed most.

One of the most powerful tools in supporting transition is developing strong relationships. Whether a child is moving from Reception to Year 1 or further up the school, knowing they are surrounded by familiar, trusted adults makes a world of difference. In our younger years, this is formalised through the Key Person Approach, but across the school, all staff play a role in offering continuity, reassurance, and encouragement.

Over the coming weeks, you may hear your child talking about visiting their new classroom or meeting a new teacher. In Pre-Prep, children are already spending time in their upcoming learning spaces, gradually getting to know the routines and environment. Later this term, our whole-school ‘Moving Up Morning’ will give every pupil—from the youngest to the oldest—the opportunity to spend structured time in their new classrooms with their new Form Teachers and Teaching Assistant. Current Year 1 pupils have plans to spend two mornings alongside this, at Loudoun Road, giving them a chance to explore what life in Prep will look like.

Transitions are also a valuable moment for reflection. Boys are encouraged to look back on the wonderful progress they’ve made, and to start imagining the opportunities that await them next year. Through gentle conversations and lots of encouragement, we help them build confidence for what lies ahead.

As always, we are incredibly proud of the resilience, adaptability, and enthusiasm our boys show when it comes to moving on. Our aim is for every boy to feel supported, secure, and excited for the next step in their learning. With your continued partnership, we know they’ll approach the new school year ready to thrive.
