Canons Park Activity Centre

Canons Park Activity Centre

Arnold House has its own seven-acre site at Canons Park, near Edgware.

Arnold House has a long association with the playing fields at Canons Park which were owned by The Working Man’s College. In 1992 Arnold House purchased the ground and have steadily improved the facilities at Canons Park over the subsequent years.

The Centre lays alongside Canons Park, a newly restored open space which is the remnants of the grounds of a stately home belonging to the 1st Duke of Chandos.

Arnold House pupils enjoy the benefit of an artificial grass area, which has six tennis courts.

Hockey and football can also be played on the surface. There are two grass cricket squares and an artificial cricket wicket. In the Autumn Term there are three football pitches suitable for eleven-a-side matches and two five-a-side pitches. In the Spring Term there are three rugby pitches and two designated rugby training areas. All the Arnold House home fixtures are played at the Activity Centre. These take place on the relevant games afternoons and on selected Saturdays throughout the school year.

In 2005-06, the buildings at Canons Park were transformed to provide two large rooms for teaching, a new stage, tiered-seating in the hall and new changing rooms. Now known as the Canons Park Activity Centre, the School plans to make ever increasing use of this valuable and versatile resource.

In each academic year, groups of pupils will experience a number of Activity Days. Typically these include a tractor day for Years 1 & 2 (planting beans and potatoes), music and movement lessons and gymnastics for Years 3 & 4, drama, Compass Course and art days for Years 5 & 6 and maths and science days for Year 7. In the Junior School boys travel to and from Canons Park in coaches equipped with seat belts. Senior boys often travel by tube.

The theatre hosts Arnold House pupils performing in concerts and drama productions throughout the year. The Centre has close links with the community providing a meeting place for the Friends of Canons Park and other similar organisations. The centre is also home to a drama group, yoga classes, tai chi, and aikido. The local population can also enjoy bowls and tennis as members of affiliated clubs.

The Activity Centre is managed by Mr Rick Martin who has been a member of staff at Arnold House since 1989 (firstly as Head of Physical Education then as Deputy Head). Mr Paul Martin is the Head Groundsman.

Canons Park is close to the tube station of the same name on the Jubilee Line.

The address is: 44 Donnefield Avenue, Canons Park, Edgware. HA8 6RH
