Summer Term week 10 - 2nd July 2010

THE WEEK AHEAD
Week 11 of 11

Monday 05 July
1630 Governors’ Full Board meeting (in 7K)
1900 Years 5-8 Prize Giving (at The American School in London)

Tuesday 06 July
1700 Management Team meeting

Wednesday 07 July
1800 Year 8 Leavers’ Party (at Loudoun Road)

Thursday 08 July
0950 Final Assembly
1130 End of Year and Leavers’ Service (at St John’s Wood Church)
1200 End of term – boys are collected from church (the school is closed)

From the Headmaster

Just off to the gymnastics display on the lower playground………………it’s all go as we hurtle towards the last week of this term! Thank you to everyone for making yesterday evening’s Junior School Prize Giving such a special and enjoyable occasion. My only regret was of my own making: I failed to mention Kate Rawlinson when praising the work of the teaching team in Year 4. For the record, the boys would be much the poorer without her generous spirit and kindly ways.

Viv Thomas

Reminder

Next week, please can boys come equipped with carrier bags to take home all of their belongings. Everything should be out of school by Wednesday 7th July, so that they have nothing to carry to church on Thursday.

Form photos

The form photographs have been sent home this week. If your son was away on the day they were taken he will not have a photograph but do let Penny know if you would like to purchase one. The photographs cost £20.00, they are on sale or return. If you wish to purchase the photograph you need do nothing and the amount will be added to your son's bill. Please do not open the cellophane if you are not going to purchase the photograph. If you would like to have more than one copy please let Penny know. The deadline for returning any unwanted photographs is Monday evening 5th July at 4.30pm. Experience tells me that lots of boys will say "what photo?" it could well be in his locker!!!

Penny Williams

BOOK AMNESTY!

As we come to the end of yet another year, the library finds itself missing more than a few books! So... AMNESTY! Could everyone please hunt through their bookshelves and look for library books? I really need any books – however long overdue – to come back. During the holiday I’m hoping to perform a complete stock check as, at the moment, the chasm that lies between what I think I have and what I actually have is worryingly deep...

Also, if any of you have books that your boys have outgrown, and you are thinking of having a clear out – please do consider donating them to the library. The library would be very happy to accept anything and everything from baby books through to adult books suitable for Year 8. Thank you in advance!

Lastly, I’m sorry that the Birthday Book scheme has rather lapsed since Easter. This is because the Kilburn Bookshop has closed down and the wonderful Simon who was our ‘service above and beyond the call of duty’ point of contact there is now unemployed. I’m in the process of shifting the scheme to another bookshop – but anyone in need can check out the Arnold House Wish List on Amazon.co.uk. Thank you though to Takis Galatis who despite the problems managed to find a way to buy books for Maxim Alexandroff Wilson’s birthday – well done!

Leonie Flynn
Librarian

Textbooks

Could all parents please check that all textbooks are returned to school on Monday at the latest, as I shall be submitting charges to the bill for lost books on that day. This particularly applies to Y8 who have been out of normal lessons since CE, and whom it has been difficult to chase up. Thank you.

Charles Keal
Head of Mathematics

Ben Griffiths - flute teacher at Arnold House

Very sadly, Ben Griffiths is leaving Arnold House at the end of this term. He has been our excellent and dedicated flute teacher here for over 5 years, and I know that the boys have enjoyed learning the instrument immensely with him. He is to take up a full-time post with East Sussex Music Services in Brighton from September, and we wish him every success with his new life on the south coast. Both Mr Thomas and Mr Swinden will be saying a few words about Ben in Monday's senior assembly.

Ben's successor in September will be Paul Riley, who currently works as a visiting flute teacher at St George's School, Mayfair and St Anthony's School in Hampstead. We look forward to welcoming him to the music department at the start of the new term.

Visit from Clarrie Wallis

On 29th June Clarrie Wallis, curator for the four Tate galleries gave us a talk on some of the Tate galleries and exhibitions. She also showed us some photographs of the artwork, they were amazing! She told us about her job that includes buying art and travelling all around the world to see art. My favourite picture was a sculpture by an artist called Fiona Banner. She had bought two parts of a harrier plane and stuck them together and then painted them. Clarrie said it was hard work getting it in! I really liked the talk and will definitely visit one of the Tate’s over the summer.

Asher Laws

On the 29th June Year 5 had a special visitor, Clarrie Wallis. She was here to tell us about her job, she works at the Tate gallery and she told us some interesting facts. Clarrie’s job is a curator; she chooses some of the art which goes into the gallery. A curator also works with artists and travels a lot. I think the talk was amazing and everyone in Year 5 had a great time and learnt a lot. Thanks Clarrie!

Hrishi Shah

Junior Choir

Please note that there will be no Junior Choir on Tuesday 6th July. We will start again on Tuesday 14th September!

Paul Swinden
Director of Music

7K Form Page

7K will have photographs taken for their Form page on Monday. Please remember to bring in props or costumes as appropriate (I shan’t give any more details because we don’t want everyone to know what we are doing).

Charles Keal

Winter Cricket Nets at Lord’s

Thank you to all the boys that have confirmed their commitment to nets commencing in January 2011 at The Home of Cricket. The acceptance sheet will be removed next week so I can assess the numbers, this will guide me on how many lanes to book, at present thirty six boys will begin indoor coaching.
I will keep the boys and parents updated.
With thanks,

Richard Bagnall

Jersey Cricket Tour

An early meet and a party of fourteen headed to Gatwick for our onward journey to the beautiful island of Jersey. Victoria College was the stunning venue for our opening match, Meyer [44] and Fry [60] caressed the ball to all parts and gave us the perfect opening partnership, Bouchier [15], F. Villiers [15] and J. Villiers [19] all contributed to a total of 171-9 off the allotted 30 overs. In response, the hosts edged to victory in the final over, the difference between the sides the ‘Extras’ column, our bowlers at times harshly judged. On to two entertaining games against the County side, chasing a mammoth 216 to win we fell short, however a superb knock by Bouchier [49] in tandem with his skipper Fry [35] gave the opposition concern as we were ahead of the asking rate.

In the return fixture with fatigue setting in we could only post 76, Lutyens [20] the pick of the batsmen, we succumbed to defeat, but battled to the end of the contest. The boys represented the school with usual sportsmanship and dignity in all the games. With superb weather, excellent hotel accommodation and a fun day on the beach, the tour was a huge success. I wish to thank the Bursar, Mr Fletcher, for his immense support to the boys and myself throughout our visit.

Thanks to all involved, [and a victory for the boys in the Boys versus Fathers match at Canons Park on Thursday night.]

Tourists: Fry [Capt], Meyer, Lutyens, Tan, Tudball, Weiland, J. Villiers, F. Villiers, Rabinowitz, Bouchier, Ragoowansi, Leek, Bagnall, Fletcher.

Richard Bagnall

Voluntary Summer History Projects

Boys in Years 5 to 7 are encouraged, on a purely voluntary basis, to produce a project on a topic from one of the periods below, which are based on what they have studied in class this academic year:

Y5: Exploration and settlement of the New World and American History
Y6: World War Two
Y7: Topics from the Early Middle Ages covered in class

Boys are free to select whatever medium they wish – handwritten, PowerPoint, Publisher, make a film, write a song, make up a game, write a play, draw a picture, make a model... the possibilities are endless, the main point is that boys should show their knowledge.

I stress that this is voluntary, but boys who do a project will gain History Awards, which will be added to the totals for the new academic year.

John Hill
Old Boy Cycling from Cambridge to Casablanca for Charity

Along with five friends, an old Arnold House boy Hugh Pemberton is cycling from Cambridge to Casablanca in aid of The Sick Children's Trust. More specifically they are raising money for Acorn House, which provides home from home accommodation for the families of children who need to stay for long periods of time at Addenbrooke's hospital, Cambridge. It's going to be 1800-2000 miles depending on the route they take. They're leaving on the 17th July and are hoping to complete it in about 28 days, therefore averaging 75-80 miles a day.

Congratulations

In the Junior Assembly there wasn’t a class without a Class Award. The Golden Boys this week are as follows: 1L Archie Patel, 1R Orlando Widdicombe, 2B Rafi Naggar, 2D Max Lipton and Luke O’Dea, 3J Charlie Lewis, 3L Miles Fumagalli and 4C Alex Wright. Junior Cricketer of the Week for an outstanding performance on Tuesday went to Rohan Padam Mehta.

Maths Awards have been given out in plenty this week. Jamie Villiers got 10, James Wallace received 15, Freddie Poser and Daniyal Sachee both acquired 20, while Theo Lemos, Emil Fattal and Umer Hasan all worked their way to 25. That is not all however as Qumarss Bagheri collected 30 and Matteo Perper amassed a huge 35 Maths Awards. History Awards from Mr Hill were awarded to Will Watts for 25 and to Omar Zakaria for an impressive 50. Mrs Bahra decided that some of her pupils deserved their awards being given out in assembly this week for their efforts in Religious Studies this term. They are Sachin Oberoi for 20 RS Awards, Omar Zakaria and Sajjad-Ali Mohadjerani-Irvani for 25 Awards. The Geography Department gave 10 Geography Awards to Nicolas Markantonis and Eklavya Sharma. Both Sam Sether and Sam Percival were given Latin Awards in assembly this week due to each one achieving a 23% improvement and a 56% improvement respectively. The Year 7 Geography Trip brought out the best in some of the boys and three of them received special mention this week with Ollie Joseph getting a Gold Commendation, Guy Bouchier getting a Silver and Jamie Villiers getting a commendation also.

The Chess Club has been particularly productive this term and therefore it was felt that giving some awards was the appropriate action. Jahan Sahni got the Plate while Alistair Milne and Tom McMahon both got medals for their consistently intelligent play over the term. Andrew Railton was the Most Improved Player. In the Junior School, Adam Kane, Kiran Weston, Will Bacon and Joshua Abrahams all received medals for playing some good chess this term. Harrison Davis and Michael Falk were the two Most Improved Players.

The following boys received their Citizenship bars: Callum Wainstein, Robert Keith, Eklavya Sharma and Daniyal Sachee. Jack Snell, Sajjad-Ali Mohadjerani-Irvani and Tom Gunn received Industry Badges. In Year 8, despite it being the last week, it wasn’t too late for Cosmo Lawson to get his Citizenship tie and for Alexander Newburg to get his Industry tie. As this was the last Awards Assembly of the year, it was so encouraging to see that our boys are trying their best right up to the end of term.

Letter from Canons Park

It is not quite the end of the day. The Year 5 & 6 boys have gone home and there is a lull in proceedings before the 1st XI and their parents arrive for the annual fathers v sons match. The after match feast should be the highlight of the evening.

Yesterday afternoon I umpired most of the 1st XI game v Belmont and witnessed Adam Meyer play one of the best innings I have ever seen from an AH player. As wickets fell around him he was in complete control and his driving through the off side, in particular, was a joy to watch.

Last weekend CP hosted the Middlesex U15 ladies XI and I was most impressed with the standard of their cricket. We thoroughly enjoyed having them and over the next few weeks we have the boys U11 and the ladies U11 from the county using our facilities.

I did miss the end of the game on Wednesday as I had to go to my allotment site where the judges from Barnet Federation were to adjudicate on the site individual competition. I won! Through to the next round but as we break up next week I should have a few more hours to spare. Even Arthur has been under strain with the four thirty starts to the day!

I do not expect that there will be an In House next week so I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for your support over the last school year and hope that all of you have a great holiday. Sharon, Arthur and I are walking the South Downs Way. I hope we have some rain before then!

Rick Martin

SPORTS NEWS

CRICKET

First XI

Winning the toss Skipper Fry had no hesitation in electing to bat, we needed a solid start with boys cementing partnerships, Belmont from Mill Hill the visitors. The exact opposite was provided as Meyer witnessed five colleagues depart, accumulating a total of eight runs between them, poor technique offering catching practice to the opposition. This elevated Meyer [52] to the best innings of his A.H. career, he timed the ball with the utmost ease, using his feet to the spinners and running with aggressive intent. Rabinowitz [13] was his perfect foil and played with maturity, Weiland [28] peppered the cover boundary with regularity and they edged us to 112 off the allotted twenty overs, a total that we settled for after a disastrous early innings collapse.

In reply the guests started well and punished anything short and wide; they were in control until a superb catch from Weiland at deep backward square gave us the confidence at the precise time. Lutyens [4-12] was superb, a full length, and stump to stump, his fielding is of the highest standard. J. Villiers [3-26], Bouchier [1-16], Weiland [1-17] and Leek [1-0] all contributed to a tense but deserved win by fourteen runs.

A.H.: 112-6 Belmont: 98
Team: Fry [Capt], Meyer, Lutyens, J. Villiers, F. Villiers, Tan, Rabinowitz, Bouchier, Ragoowansi, Weiland, Leek.

Richard Bagnall

Second XI

On Wednesday the Arnold House 2nd XI hosted Belmont in their Twenty 20 fixture. After being asked to bowl first, AH put in a much improved bowling and fielding performance, with Jeremy Assouly in particular having a good day behind the stumps. Three bowlers stood out for AH, Sam Sether bowling superbly to take one wicket whilst only conceding 2 runs from his 4 overs. George Beckman and Sam Percival were also outstanding, each claiming three wickets. Despite AH’s best efforts, Belmont were still able to post a daunting total of 124 runs. In reply, AH got off to a terrible start, losing their first 6 wickets for only 17 runs. But coming in at number five was AH’s inspirational captain Sam Sether, who used the pull shot effectively to steady the innings. Sether finished on a season high 34 not out as AH posted 82. Whilst this wasn’t the result the team was after, it was a pleasing improvement on past performances and the boys should take some pride in their efforts.

Sam Gibson

COLTS

Colts A

The Under 11A team were denied victory in a last ball thriller against Westminster. In scorching conditions, AH were able to bat first and put on 114 runs from their 20 overs with Luca Perper (4), Jack Snell (42 not out), Tommy Soros (26), Douglas Law (11) and Frankie Tudball (2 not out) all contributing. It was a very impressive performance from Snell who played a fine array of shots to all parts of the ground. Captain, Soros also showed off his talent by plundering some excellent 4s. Westminster secured victory off the last ball when they needed a single to win. But this did not tell the whole story as AH pushed them very close with super bowling from Snell, J. Green, T. Green, Frisby and especially both Tom McMahon and Soros who grabbed some important wickets. The team I felt were worthy of winning the game, but will learn that the fielding will need to improve if they are to win their final game against Durston House on Saturday. All are welcome to support the boys.

David Cox

Colts B

The Arnold House Under 11 B cricket side travelled to Vincent Square on Monday to take on Westminster Under School. After being asked to bat first on a sunny afternoon, AH started well through some excellent batting from Harry Orwell (10) and Jonah Lowenstein (21). Asher Laws also produced a cameo innings at the end to finish on 12 runs. AH completed their 20 overs with a competitive total of 84. Unfortunately the fielding effort from AH didn’t quite match that of their batting, and only Lowenstein managed to get a wicket as WUS coasted to the total in less than 10 overs.

Sam Gibson

UNDER 8

On Tuesday the Year 3 A team played a pairs cricket match against Hereward House. After being asked to bat first, AH stamped their authority on the game with two fours from Zac Hogg of the very first two deliveries of the match. This set the tone for the rest of the innings, as Miles Fumagalli and Rohan Padam Mehta in particular batted very well as AH set an imposing total of 100 runs from only 10 overs. In reply, Hereward House struggled against some excellent bowling from Sam Hodder-Williams, Zac Hogg and Noah Greene. Some outstanding fielding from the likes of Zac Brandman and Fumagalli helped the bowlers to restrict Hereward House to 50 runs.

Sam Gibson
