Mothering Sunday ... don’t forget the cards and flowers!

From the Headmaster

Parents will be interested to know that we have recently placed advertisements in local newspapers to publicise the availability of bursary places at Arnold House. You will see below the rationale behind our new bursary scheme; a similar version of which now appears on the school website. I hope that parents will feel pleased that Arnold House is taking this lead in the prep school world.

ARNOLD HOUSE BURSARY SCHEME

Introduction
Many of the famous Independent schools to which we regularly send Arnold House boys, such as Eton, Harrow and Rugby have long-held traditions of offering bursaries and scholarships to boys of potential whose parents do not have the means to pay the school fees. Rugby, for example, (whose famous Headmaster Dr. Arnold provided inspiration for the naming of Arnold House in 1905) is aiming to support 10% of its pupils with bursaries over the next decade. St Paul’s has declared an ambition to become completely ‘needs blind’ within 25 years, meaning that it will be able to offer places to pupils irrespective of their families’ ability to pay. It is much harder for prep schools without significant endowments or a large alumni base to follow their lead. However, the Governors and Headmaster believe that Arnold House should be at the forefront of moves to ensure that bursary places at prep school age are available far more widely than they have been in the past.

The Bursary Scheme
Bursaries are available to new entrants to the School in Years 5, 6 or 7. Such awards are intended to extend the benefits of an Arnold House education to boys whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the School’s fees. In September 2010 we aim to provide four bursary places to boys with sound academic potential and strong personal qualities who will contribute fully to the wider life of the School. All bursaries are means-tested and can be awarded to supplement the contribution made by parents or to cover the full cost of fees, uniform and extras each term.

Bursaries are funded through a combination of the School’s fee income and donations from current and former parents, old boys and friends of the School. By September 2015, it is hoped that the number of bursary places available at any one time in the senior years at Arnold House will increase to eight. The Arnold House Board of Friends and the Headmaster have already embarked on fund-raising initiatives needed to engage support from the wider Arnold House community towards the bursary scheme’s long-term success.
Years 5 and 6 Maths Day

YEAR 5 & 6 will go to Canons Park on Monday for a Maths Day. The boys will leave by coach at 08.45, and they will need to bring pencil cases and calculators only (no Maths files required). They will also need to take their Games kit, as they will go straight into Games as normal at 2.15pm. Each year group will have a 2 hour workshop entitled BRIDGES: MATHS & DESIGN run by the company Architecture Workshops, and there will additionally be 4 x 30 minute activity sessions in small groups. It promises to be a useful and enjoyable day. Arrangements have been made for the 2 boys whose parents have notified the office of their need to leave school in the afternoon to return to school by tube with Mrs Ostojic by 1pm.
Year One trip to the Geffrye Museum

On Wednesday year one went on a trip to the Geffrye Museum. This museum is the museum of the home. A lady told us a story about an old woman who did not have a home. The old woman went to look for a home. She met a fox in the rubbish dump and he asked the old lady to live with him. She did not want to live there it was too smelly. Then she met a duck who wanted her to live in his pond – but it was too wet. She met lots of different animals on her travels and finally met a man who she had known from school. He offered to share his home and they had a great time living together. We all really enjoyed listening to the story.
We also got to look at the different rooms in the museum. First we looked at the Victorian room. We learnt that there was no electricity in Victorian times and that they liked to decorate their rooms with flowery patterns. Then we went to look at the modern room. The modern apartment had a bedroom above the kitchen and a television and video player. We all enjoyed our first school trip at Arnold House and had lots of fun.

Congratulations

Plenty of awards to mention this week and first up are the boys who attained Citizenship Bars. In Year 5 the following boys have a new red bar to add to their blazers: Harry Gestetner, Finnian Kane, James Leof, Cameron McQuater, James Milne, Joseph Moore, Freddie Poser, Charles Flax, Otis Frisby, Adam Gold, Nikita Joukovski and Alexander Tugwell. In Year 6: Harry Flatau, Sajjad – Ali Mohadjerani – Irvani, Douglas Law, Jacob Dicker, Alfred Murray and Bruno Pujos. Continuing with the Year 6 boys, last week they all took part in a Design Day at Canons Park. The designers from Studio ‘This & That’ were extremely impressed with the work produced on the day and wanted to commend two groups who had worked particularly hard. The first duo comprised of Arthur Donald and Bruno Pujos for their work on the branding for a new fast and stylish electric car. Alfie Murray and Harry Orwell made up the second impressive duo, who developed an idea for a green energy company, utilising water from gutters and surplus wind power generated by aircraft. The Year 7 Paris Trip before half term also produced some impressive art work, with both Guy Bouchier and Oliver Joseph receiving a small art prize for their attention to detail, use of tone and sensitive studies shown in their sketches from the Musée D'Orsay. Artists of the Week were Lucas Kearsey and James Milne for the good work they showcased, and equally creative throughout the past five days was Cameron McQuater as he picked up the Musician of the Week. In sport, the Rugby Player of the Week is the elusive scrum-half Joe Weiland.

In the Junior School, this week’s Golden Boys are Max Heller (1L), Henry Bush (1R), Rohan Prasad (2B), Oscar Vogel (2D), Jacob Carroll (3J), Isaac Lockwood (3L), Kiran Weston (4B) and Raphael Mizrahi (4C). Music Certificates went to Alexander Austin, Hector Cross, Joel Toledano, Salvador Widdicombe, Antonio Tarizzo, Maxwell Douglas and Nathan Bhak. Junior Artist of the week is Arash Bagheri and the Junior Rugby player of the week is Vishant Chanrai.

Well done to all the boys and enjoy the Arnold House Disco!

Letter from Canons Park

It has been a busy week for us here at CP. Year 7 have been our guests to sit their examinations and we have enjoyed fixtures every afternoon. The weather has been much improved and on Monday and Tuesday was positively balmy. I would like to say how much we enjoyed entertaining Year 7. Their behaviour was impeccable and their attitude to their exams was most impressive. I hope their results reflect their positive attitude.

Wednesday’s fixture versus Keble was the best game I have refereed this season. A hard fought close encounter played at pace (I was blowing a bit by half time). All the AH boys impressed but I thought Joe Weiland was outstanding in all departments at scrum half. Sam Sether, our diminutive flanker, did, however, pull off the highlight of the game when he brought down the opposition ‘big lad’ in full flight.
Another full week next week (we are busy now to the end of term) with a Maths Day for Years 5 and 6 on Monday and on Wednesday a rugby sevens and hockey tournament for the senior boys.

Let us hope to see more sunshine.
UNDER 13 TEAMS

The First XV

On Wednesday Arnold House hosted Keble at Canons Park on a fine afternoon. Arnold House started the game with intensity and dominated the set pieces to take an early lead in the first half through tries to Oscar Tehrani and Freddie Villiers. However Keble staged a fight back to create a tense finish in the second half. AH continued to apply pressure through an outstanding 40m effort for Villiers for his second try. Joe Weiland was also rewarded with an outstanding game with a double, before Matthew Stokes secured the win with a late try. Other players that stood out included Adam Meyer, who controlled the game well, and Sam Sether, who again was first to the breakdown on a number of occasions.

Score: Arnold House 30 (Tries: J. Weiland 2, F. Villiers 2, O. Tehrani, M. Stokes), Keble 26
MVP Points: J. Weiland 3, A. Meyer 2, O. Tehrani 1.

Sam Gibson and Dayne Matthews
COLTS

Colts A

With the sun making a long awaited appearance, the day was perfect for Rugby as we welcomed Keble, who in past years have always been a close contest. A quickly taken penalty by Lowenstein and Soros was excellent with his finish, he was successful in contributing twenty five personal points; his third try was a wingers delight, pace, balance and strength. Our opponents retorted with two scores, however we had control as the half concluded. The resumption witnessed our visitors responding with some excellent running rugby and they narrowed the point’s difference with two quick scores, our boys were a little brittle with the tackling. Thankfully our forwards started to dominate proceedings at the breakdown, Lowenstein getting his backs going forward again, Perper, Markantonis, Lemos and Snell just held up with the try line in sight. The hosts always looked dangerous when they got the ball wide, Dryer touching down; he displayed some excellent running lines. Perper had a profitable day converting, ten points contributing to a hard fought and enjoyable victory, our rugby at times was very pleasing.

Well done boys, great team effort.

Full time: A.H. 40-24 Keble. Squad: J. Spiro [Capt], E. Sharma, Y. Lemos, H. Orwell, J. Snell, J. Lowenstein, L. Perper,
C. Dryer, N. Markantonis, J. Wallace, T. Soros, D. Law.

Colts B

The team secured a great 20-17 win in a very tightly fought contest against Keble at Canons Park. This game went right down to the wire and only a very late try secured victory for the home side. The game showed that all the hard graft that we had been working on in training was able to come off in a competitive environment. The game started at a blistering pace with plenty of crunching tackles. The home side were able to score three quick tries from Miles Rabinowitz, Qumarss Bagheri and Adam Wissen. However, AH conceded a sloppy try before half time, which allowed Keble back into the game. The second half started like the first, but this time Keble were in control and two tries towards the end plus a conversion looked to have won the game. But with literally seconds on the clock, a maul from our own try line resulted in the ball being carried towards the opposite end and someone from AH managed to get the ball down and secure a famous victory. The boys were ecstatic with their victory. They had shown pride, passion and belief in their performance – the team’s motto. If the boys now continue with this heroic endeavour, they will surely end the season successfully. Well done, lads!
UNDER 10
Under 10A

On Thursday the under 10 A team travelled away to play the The Hall for the second time this season. AH were firm favourites after winning the first fixture, and came out firing in the initial stages of the match. However, as the game progressed, The Hall got themselves back in the match and managed to score the winning try through an intercept late in the second half. Jonah Lowenstein was outstanding for AH and Adam Wissen looked dangerous each time he touched the ball.
Arnold House 20 (Tries: A. Wissen 2, A. Gold 2), The Hall 25

Sam Gibson

Under 10B

The boys had yet another chance to pit their wits against The Hall on Thursday. With a number of crucial players missing, other boys had a chance to show off how much they had improved this year. It was always going to be hard against a team who have clearly been religiously eating their Ready Brek over a number of years, and so it proved. AH looked dangerous going forward, with Simon Franks, Hrishi Shah and Ayomide Soleye and the rejuvenated Mani Monibi breaking the line a number of times, but a number of missed tackles meant that the boys trailed by 20-0 at half time. Despite this, their positive attitude towards the sport ensured that they went out for the second half in high spirits and hoping for a turnaround. Again, strong running and powerful play in the ruck gave AH some openings, which Harry Gestetner expertly converted to give the boys something to cheer about. After a tough match, the boys ended up being defeated 30-10, but with their pride intact. Well done boys.

Nick Odlin

UNDER 9
Under 9 A

In a pulsating contest of open flowing rugby, The Hall and our boys contributed to a game of high quality. We started so positively and Cryer, Batty and Bacon gave us the advantage, however the opposition eroded our gain with two quick scores. The match was highly entertaining as both teams matched each other, scores at each end on a regular basis. Skipper Batty got over the try line again assisted by Bacon, O’Dea [2] and Naggar [2].

The final whistle concluded an excellent demonstration of handling skills, supporting the ball carrier and creative running lines, a draw the right result. The boys will represent the school at Edge Grove on Sunday in an Under 9 Rugby Festival.
Full Time: A.H. 40-40 The Hall. Squad: G. Batty [Capt], D. Fried, N. Naggar, H. Wright, W. Bacon, E. Jalil, J. O’Dea,
L. Tal, O. Cryer, Z. Hogg.

HOCKEY
UNDER 13 TEAMS

On Wednesday AH hosted a mini hockey tournament. Aldenham supplied two teams as did Keble and AH. The AH A team had an excellent afternoon. Out of the four games that they played they won three and drew one. Despite not conceding a goal all afternoon, the nil-nil draw with Aldenham coupled with our slightly inferior goal difference meant that we ended the competition in second place. Every boy impressed. Clyde Moss scored a peach of a goal and other AH men to get on the score sheet were Andrew Lewis, Seth Dunford, Cosmo Lawson and Edward Strang. Jake Curtis, Jahan Sahni and Percy Metcalfe were resolute in defence and Nat Philipps showed bravery and agility in goal. I was also pleased for Wilf Wheeler who made an assured debut in the A team. Seth Dunford was named player of the tournament.

Chris Kerr

COLTS

On Monday every player in the hockey squad took part in a match with St Anthony's. The teams adapted well to the slightly smaller pitches of the Power League Centre and every boy performed with credit. The A's lost 3-1 but had the ball in the net on two other occasions and were denied by the fact that the shots were fractionally outside the small shooting circles. Andrew Railton was impressive again as were Arthur Donald and James Green. The B's won their game 4-1 and Finnian Kane, Umer Hasan, Alex Tugwell and Harry Flatau impressed. The C's were involved in a 12 goal thriller winning 7-5 in the final analysis. Charles Flax, James Milne and James Curtis were in fine form.

Chris Kerr

UNDER 10

On Thursday the Under 10's were in action against the Hall. The team adapted quickly to the Unihockey format that was played and every boy delivered a committed performance. Asher Laws, Ben Gunn, Nikita Joukovski, Alex Tugwell, Finnian Kane and James Milne and James Curtis deserve special praise for their efforts. The games ended with one AH win, one loss and two draws.

Under 10 C

The Under 10 C Hockey team travelled away to take on St Anthony’s on Monday. It was a thrilling encounter as 12 goals in total were scored, fortunately for AH they scored the majority of them to take the match 7-5. Charles Flax opened the scoring with a well taken penalty, before James Milne went on a rampage to score 4 goals. James Curtis was well rewarded for a strong game with 2 goals, whilst William Watts had a strong game in defence.
