Absences

The school is obliged, by law, to report to the DfES an annual account of all pupil absences in two categories:  authorised and unauthorised.  If a pupil is away from school without permission, or if his absence cannot be accounted for according to one of the reasons set out below, then his absence would count as unauthorised.

Illness
In the case of illness, parents/carers should telephone or e-mail the School Office (office@arnoldhouse.co.uk) before 9.30 am.  on the first morning that a boy is away.  On his return, parents/carers should write to their son’s Form Teacher explaining the reason for his absence and attaching a doctor’s certificate if appropriate.  In the case of a prolonged illness, it is not necessary to telephone the School Office every day.

Medical & Dental Appointments
Parents are asked to make these appointments outside school hours if at all possible.

Visits to Senior Schools
Please let the Headmaster and your son’s Form Teacher know at least a week in advance of any visits arranged during school time.  A handwritten note, e-mail or telephone call to the School Office are all acceptable.

Religious Holidays
At the beginning of the academic year parents are asked to let the School know of any dates on which their son will be absent on religious grounds.  Special forms for this purpose are available from the School Office.

Other Reasons for Absence
Occasionally, boys may need to miss school for exceptional reasons.  In these circumstances, parents should write to the Headmaster at least one week in advance to ask permission for leave of absence.  The school places great emphasis on regular attendance which can so easily be affected by parents extending weekends, holidays and half terms and therefore permission for leave of absence will, as a rule, only be granted for truly exceptional reasons.  A clear distinction between working time and holiday time sends the right message to pupils about the value of their education and the School is grateful to parents for their understanding and co-operation in reinforcing this message.
